What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient practice, dating back several thousand years. It originates in China and is still widely practiced there and throughout Asia. In the past few decades, it has gained prominence in the West, with American doctors researching it and implementing its techniques. It is the most well-researched and highly regarded forms of alternative medicine.
In an acupuncture treatment, a trained acupuncturist will insert small sterilized needles into specific parts of a patient’s body. In some cases, heat or electricity may be applied to the needles to enhance their therapeutic effects.
How it Works
In Oriental Medicine, it is believed that the body is filled with “meridians,” channels through which “qi” or life energy will travel. These meridians act as rivers, and they can become blocked, disrupting the flow of chi. Acupuncture works by removing these blocks and restoring balance.
Western research has shown that the qimeridians correspond with the body’s nerve pathways. This nerve manipulation works to increase the “feel good” hormones, endorphins, while reducing stress hormones like cortisol. This reduction in stress hormones in turn causes a reduction in inflammation, boosts immunity and improves circulation.
What Can it Do?
Acupuncture has been shown effective in a variety of circumstances. It is used widely for pain management and helps with inflammatory conditions, such as autoimmune and gastrointestinal disorders. It has also been used successfully to help with recovering from addiction and even weight loss.
